Seven Limbs

A seventy minute piece for guitarist Nels Cline and the Aizuri Quartet. Seven Limbs is available on Sunnyside Records and on streaming services.

This piece is inspired by an ancient Buddhist prayer, also called The Seven Limbs. Both the piece and the practice are in seven sections: Prostration; Offering; Confession & Purification; Rejoicing; Requesting the Turning of the Wheel of Dharma; Beseeching the Buddhas Not to Pass Away; and Dedication. In the tradition of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and the music of Arvo Pärt, Seven Limbs is music put in service to a spiritual ideal.
